The
Spix Macaw project is using an approach of community awareness to aid in
the recovery of this species. Long term protection has been set up for
the Caatinga woodland where the Spix resides and field biologists are carrying
out measures of protection such as fencing off livestock from key areas.
Their natural habitat is being monitored and restored to its original state
through the measuring of the productivity of major food plants. The range
of the single male in the wild has been monitored to find the extent of
his dispersion. All of his natural nesting sights are being observed and
nest boxes have been added in his region. The single male Spix has been
observed with a female Illigers Macaw therefore the habits of the Illigers
Macaws are being noted as a possible assistant in the preservation of the
Spix. Schools are being built and equipped to educate the local community.
