The Golden Conure fund will be based in our WPT-USA office and I (Glenn Reynolds) will be pleased to hear from anyone who has a special interest in this species, or wishes to contribute in any way. We are suggesting that anyone who holds this species should consider sending $20.00 for each bird that they hold to our new fund. Mike Reynolds of Paradise Park in the UK has started the fund with a check for $100.00 for the five Golden Conures that he currently houses. WPT-USA will match the first individual contribution of $1000.00 to this fund. The outstanding wildlife artist Grant Hacking has agreed to provide a painting of the Golden Conure. to assist us in raising funds. T-shirts will be available by August, 1999 bearing a Golden Conure done by Cyd Riley of Fire Fly T-shirts. We hope that the prints will be available in mid September, 2000. We are trying to raise $35,000.00 for this fund. As you all have heard the country of Brazil, the origin of the Queen of Bavaria's Conure, is in financial turmoil and will not be able to support this fund. Poverty may be a part of the driving force that leads trappers to the places left in the wild where this species is from and motivates them to trap this bird for sale in the illegal market. As aviculturists and pet bird owners we should give back something for the pleasure that we get out of our birds. We need to help the wild parrots survive so that generations to come will be there for our children to enjoy.
